Can you have both a TFN and an ABN at the same time?

Yes, and many working holiday makers do. Here is how the two numbers work together and when you need both.

Yes, you can absolutely hold both a Tax File Number and an Australian Business Number at the same time. In fact, you need a TFN before you can even apply for an ABN, so by definition, anyone with an ABN also has a TFN.

How the two numbers work together

Your TFN is your personal tax identifier. It is used for your employment income, your tax return, and your superannuation. Your ABN is your business identifier. It is used when you are operating as a sole trader or contractor and invoicing clients for your work.

If you are working as an employee at one job and contracting on the side, you use your TFN for the employment income and your ABN for the contracting income. Both are declared in the same tax return at the end of the financial year.

A common scenario for working holiday makers

Many working holiday makers end up with both. You might work in a cafe as an employee, using your TFN and being paid through the payroll, and also do some freelance photography, graphic design, or seasonal farm work as a contractor, invoicing under your ABN. This is entirely normal and legal.

Do not use your ABN where your TFN should be used

One common mistake is quoting an ABN to an employer who should be treating you as an employee. This can create complications because the employer may then pay you without deducting tax, leaving you with a tax liability you were not expecting at the end of the year. Make sure you understand whether each work arrangement is employment or contracting before deciding which number to use.

Tax obligations when you have both

All income from both sources must be declared in your tax return. Your employer will report your employment income to the ATO through their payroll system, and you are responsible for tracking and declaring any income earned under your ABN. Keep clear records of both throughout the year so that lodging your return is straightforward.
