How to apply for your superannuation back after leaving Australia

A step-by-step guide to the DASP application process, from finding your super funds to receiving the payment in your account.

Applying for your superannuation back through the DASP process involves a few steps, but it is entirely manageable once you know what is needed. Here is how to go through it from start to finish.

Step one: Find all your super funds

Before you apply, you need to know which fund or funds hold your super. If you worked for multiple employers, you may have contributions spread across different funds. Log in to myGov and check the ATO section for a summary of your super accounts. This will show you all funds that have received contributions in your name.

If you find multiple accounts, you can either apply for each one separately through DASP or consolidate them into a single fund before applying. Consolidating first simplifies the process because you only need to submit one application.

Step two: Gather your documents

You will need your TFN, your passport details, your visa grant and expiry dates, your super fund name and member number, and a bank account in the country where you want the funds to be paid. The account does not need to be an Australian account. International transfers are standard for DASP payments.

Step three: Submit your application

Applications are made through the DASP online application system on the ATO website. Work through the form, entering your personal details, visa information, and super fund details. If you are applying for multiple funds, you will complete a separate application for each one.

Once submitted, you will receive a reference number. The ATO sends your application to your super fund, which then verifies the details and processes the payment. This typically takes up to 28 days.

Step four: Receive your payment

Once processed, the super fund pays the amount directly to the bank account you nominated, after deducting the applicable withholding tax. The withholding tax rate for working holiday makers is currently 65% of the taxable component. See our guide on tax on super withdrawals for a full breakdown of how this is calculated.

What if you cannot find some of your super

If you believe super was paid on your behalf but you cannot locate the fund, use the ATO's lost super search tool through myGov or contact the ATO directly. See our guide on finding lost superannuation for more on this.
