How to register for an ABN in Australia as a backpacker

Registering for an ABN is free and takes around 15 minutes online. Here is exactly how to do it as a working holiday visa holder.

Registering for an Australian Business Number (ABN) is straightforward and there is no government fee involved. The application is made through the Australian Business Register (ABR) website and most applications are processed on the spot or within a few days.

What you need before you apply

You will need your Tax File Number (TFN) before you can apply for an ABN. If you do not have one yet, you will need to apply for your TFN first and wait for it to arrive. You will also need your contact details, your Australian address, and a description of the business activity you will be carrying out. For most working holiday makers, this will be something like seasonal harvest work, freelance services, or gig economy work.

The application process

Go to the ABR website and select the option to apply for a new ABN as a sole trader. Work through the form, entering your personal details, your TFN, your business activity, and the date you started or intend to start your business activities. The form is straightforward and takes around 15 minutes.

Once submitted, most applications are approved immediately and your ABN is displayed on screen. You will also receive a confirmation by email. Some applications are put into a review queue and take a few business days, but this is less common.

Using your ABN correctly

Once you have your ABN, you need to quote it on every invoice you issue. An invoice without an ABN allows the business paying you to legally withhold 47% of the payment. Make sure every invoice you send includes your ABN, your name, the services provided, the date, and the amount.

Keep a record of all income you earn under your ABN. You are responsible for declaring it all in your tax return at the end of the financial year and for setting aside enough to cover your tax liability throughout the year.

Cancelling your ABN when you leave

When you are finished working in Australia and no longer carrying on a business, you should cancel your ABN through the ABR website. This is a simple process and ensures the ABR's records stay accurate. See our guide on cancelling your ABN when you leave Australia for more detail.
