A Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique 9-digit number issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). It is your permanent identifier in the Australian tax system and stays with you for life. Whether you work in Australia once for a few months or return multiple times over the years, your TFN never changes and never expires.
Every worker in Australia needs one, regardless of whether they are a citizen, a permanent resident, or an international visitor on a working holiday visa. The ATO uses it to track your income, your tax payments, and any credits or refunds you may be eligible for.
Why your TFN matters from day one
Without a TFN registered with your employer, they are required by Australian law to withhold tax at the top rate of 47%. That is nearly half of everything you earn, gone before it reaches your bank account. As a working holiday maker with a TFN, the rate that applies to your income is 15%, which is significantly lower.
The difference adds up quickly. On a weekly wage of $1,000, the gap between 47% withholding and 15% withholding is $320 every single week. Over a few months of work, that is thousands of dollars that should be in your pocket.
What the ATO uses your TFN for
Your TFN is not just about pay. The ATO links it to every aspect of your financial life while you are in Australia. It is required when you lodge your annual tax return at the end of the financial year, when you access your superannuation account, and when you open certain Australian bank accounts. It is also used to identify you if the ATO ever needs to contact you about your tax affairs.
Think of it as the foundation of your financial identity in Australia. Every other obligation, whether that is a tax return, a super claim, or an ABN registration, connects back to it.
Who can apply for a TFN
Anyone who holds a visa that permits work in Australia can apply. This includes holders of the Working Holiday Visa subclass 417 and the Work and Holiday Visa subclass 462. You can apply online through the ATO website either before or after arriving in Australia, as long as your visa has already been granted.
The application is free. There is no government fee and no cost involved. The process is entirely online and takes around 10 minutes to complete. Most applicants receive their TFN within 28 days, though it sometimes arrives sooner depending on the ATO's processing times.
Giving your TFN to your employer
Once you receive your TFN, you will need to complete a Tax File Number Declaration form for each employer you work for. This is the document that tells your employer what tax rate to apply to your wages. Make sure you submit it promptly. Until your employer has it on file, they are required to withhold at the highest rate regardless of your visa type.
This applies to every employer, including casual and part-time roles. Even if you are only working a few shifts somewhere, you should still provide your TFN.
What if you have already started work without a TFN
Apply as soon as possible and let your employer know it is on the way. Once your TFN is registered with them, the correct tax rate will apply going forward. Any overpaid tax from the period before your TFN was registered can be reclaimed through your tax return at the end of the financial year. You will not permanently lose that money as long as you lodge a return before the deadline.
