What is an income statement in Australia and how do you access yours?

An income statement shows your total wages and tax withheld for the year. Here is how to find yours and what to do with it.

An income statement is the digital record that shows the total wages your employer paid you during a financial year and the total amount of tax withheld. It has replaced the old paper PAYG payment summary. Your employer submits this information directly to the ATO through their payroll system, and it then appears in your myGov account linked to the ATO.

How to access your income statement

Log in to myGov and open the ATO service. Navigate to the income and employment section, then income statements. You will see a record for each employer who paid you during the financial year. Each record will show a status of either in progress, meaning your employer has not yet finalised the data, or tax ready, meaning the data is finalised and accurate.

When do income statements become available

Employers have until 14 July each year to finalise their income statements for the previous financial year. This means that in early July, many income statements will still show as in progress. Wait until they are marked as tax ready before lodging your return, as the figures may still be updated.

What to do if there is an error in your income statement

If the income or tax withheld figures in your income statement do not match your payslips, contact your employer first and ask them to correct the data. If the employer is unresponsive or you have already left Australia, contact the ATO. They can assist with correcting employer reporting errors.

What if you had multiple employers

All your employers will appear separately in the income statements section. Make sure you review all of them before lodging your tax return. The total of all income and all withholding across all employers is what appears in your return.
