What is a White Card and do you need one on a working holiday visa?

If you want to work in construction in Australia, you need a White Card before your first day on site. Here is what it is, how to get it, and what it costs.

If you are planning to work on a construction site in Australia, whether that is building, civil works, landscaping, or any hands-on trade role, you need a White Card before you step foot on site. It is a legal requirement, not a suggestion, and no legitimate employer will allow you to start without one.

What is a White Card?

The White Card, officially called the Construction Induction Training card, is a certification that proves you have completed workplace health and safety training relevant to the construction industry. It was introduced to reduce the rate of injuries and fatalities on Australian construction sites, which historically have been among the most dangerous work environments in the country.

The card confirms that you understand on-site hazards, emergency procedures, your rights and responsibilities as a worker, and how to identify and report unsafe conditions. It does not qualify you to perform any specific trade โ€” it is purely a safety credential that is required of everyone working on a construction site.

Who needs one?

Anyone who performs construction work in Australia. This includes labourers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, landscapers, scaffolders, and anyone else working on a site. It also applies to people who regularly visit construction sites as part of their job.

As a working holiday maker, if you are doing fruit picking, hospitality, or office work, you do not need a White Card. But if someone offers you construction work, even short-term casual labouring, you will need one before you start.

How to get a White Card

You complete a short training course through a registered training organisation (RTO). The course can be done in person or online, depending on the state you are in. It typically takes between four and eight hours and covers the core safety content required by Australian law.

The cost is around $100, though prices vary between providers. Once you complete the course and pass the assessment, your White Card is issued, usually within a few days.

Is the White Card valid across all states?

Generally yes. The White Card is nationally recognised across most of Australia, meaning a card issued in Queensland is valid for work in New South Wales, Victoria, and elsewhere. However, Western Australia has historically operated a separate system, so it is worth confirming acceptance if you are heading there.

How long does it last?

The White Card does not expire. Once issued, it is valid for life, provided you received it through a registered training organisation. Keep it safe and carry it to any construction job.

Can you claim the cost as a tax deduction?

Yes. If you completed the White Card course to qualify for or maintain employment in construction, the course cost is a legitimate work-related tax deduction. Keep your receipt and include it when you lodge your tax return.
