If you move to a new address in Australia, you should update it with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) as soon as possible. The ATO sends your TFN letter and any other important tax correspondence to the address on file. If that address is wrong, you could miss documents that matter.
Why keeping your address updated matters
Your TFN is delivered by post to the address you provided on your application. If you have already moved, the letter will not follow you. Beyond the TFN itself, the ATO may send notices, assessments, or refund information to your address on file. Missing these can cause delays in getting your tax refund.
How to update your address with the ATO
The easiest way to update your address is through myGov, the Australian government's online portal. Once you link your myGov account to the ATO, you can update your contact details at any time. Log in, go to the ATO section, and select "My profile" to update your address.
If you do not have a myGov account, you can also call the ATO directly on 13 28 61 and update your details over the phone. You will need your TFN and some identity information to verify who you are.
What address to use if you move frequently
If you are travelling between hostels or work placements, consider using a reliable address โ such as a friend's place, a long-term hostel, or a postal address โ rather than a temporary one. This reduces the risk of missing important correspondence.
Does this affect your tax return?
Not directly. Your tax return is lodged electronically and your refund is paid into your bank account, not sent by post. However, any ATO notices or adjustment letters will go to the address on file, so it is still worth keeping it current. You can update your address at any time through the ATO's online services.
