What happens to your Australian tax obligations after you leave the country?

Leaving Australia does not end your tax obligations there. Here is what you still need to do after you depart.

Leaving Australia does not end your Australian tax obligations. If you earned income during an Australian financial year, you are required to lodge a tax return for that year regardless of whether you are still in the country. There are also super and administrative obligations worth being aware of before and after you leave.

Lodging your tax return from overseas

Your tax return can be lodged online from anywhere in the world, either through myGov or through a registered tax agent. The deadline is 31 October following the end of the financial year in which you earned the income. If you use a registered tax agent, you may qualify for an extended deadline.

Do not assume that because you have left Australia you no longer need to file. The ATO has your income records from your employers and will be expecting a return. Failing to lodge when required can result in penalties.

Claiming your superannuation

If superannuation contributions were made on your behalf during your time in Australia, you can apply for them back through the DASP process once your visa has expired and you have left the country. This can be done from overseas and does not require you to return to Australia. See our detailed guide on how to apply for DASP for the full process.

Cancelling your ABN

If you registered for an ABN during your time in Australia, cancel it through the Australian Business Register website once you are no longer carrying on business activities. This is a simple process and keeps the records accurate.

Keeping access to myGov

If possible, keep your myGov account active and accessible after you leave. It is where your income statements appear and where you can track the progress of any DASP application. Make sure the email address linked to your account is one you will continue to access after departing.

Updating your address with the ATO

If you have a registered address with the ATO in Australia, consider updating it to an overseas address so any correspondence reaches you. This can be done through myGov or by contacting the ATO directly.
