Most Australian tax refunds are processed and paid within two weeks of lodgment when the return is filed electronically. Through our service as your registered tax agent, we lodge electronically so refunds typically arrive within 7-14 business days.
What is the typical refund timeline?
When we lodge your return:
- Day 0: Return lodged electronically
- Day 1-3: ATO receives and begins processing
- Day 7-14: Most refunds released to your bank account
- Day 14-21: Slower returns (peak season or complex cases) released
In quieter periods (October-June), refunds often arrive within a few business days. Peak periods (July-September) see slightly longer turnaround as the ATO processes the highest volume of returns.
What affects how quickly you get your refund?
The main factors:
- Lodgment method: electronic through a tax agent is fastest (paper returns take 8+ weeks)
- Time of year: lodge early July or after mid-September for fastest processing
- Income statement finalisation: lodging before employer reports are finalised slows processing
- Identity verification: first-time lodgers may have additional checks
- Discrepancies: if your return data does not match ATO records, manual review adds time
- Bank account details: incorrect BSB/account numbers cause significant delays
We always wait until employer reports are tax-ready (after 14 July) and double-check bank details before lodging to avoid these delays.
How do you check your refund status?
When you lodge through us:
- We monitor the ATO processing status
- We notify you when the return is finalised
- We confirm when the refund is released
- We follow up with the ATO if anything is delayed
You do not need to check the ATO portal yourself. We keep you updated through the process.
What if your refund is taking longer than expected?
If 28 days have passed without payment, contact our team:
- We check the status directly through our tax agent portal
- We identify where the return is stuck
- We resolve any issues with the ATO on your behalf
- We confirm when payment will be released
Common reasons for delays we can resolve:
- Bank account details that need updating
- Identity verification queries
- Discrepancies that need clarification
- Manual review of larger refunds
Get in touch if your refund is delayed and we will investigate.
What about refunds after leaving Australia?
If you have left Australia and lodged from overseas:
- The refund is paid to your nominated Australian bank account
- Same timeline applies (most within 2 weeks)
- If your Australian account is now closed, we can arrange alternative payment
Keep your Australian bank account open for at least 4-6 weeks after lodgment to ensure the refund clears before closing.
