If you move to a new address in Australia, update it with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) as soon as possible. The ATO sends your TFN letter and other important correspondence to the address on file.
Why does keeping your address updated matter?
The ATO uses the address on file for:
- Posting your TFN letter when first issued
- Sending tax assessments and notices
- Communicating about refunds or tax debts
- Sending DASP-related correspondence
- Identity verification confirmations
Missing any of these can delay your tax matters or cause complications later. Working holiday makers who move around frequently are particularly at risk.
How do you update your address with the ATO?
The simplest way is through our service:
- Get in touch with our team
- Give us your new address
- We update it with the ATO on your behalf as your registered tax agent
- Confirmation is sent back to us
You do not need to log into ATO online services or wait on hold. We handle it as part of managing your tax position.
What address should you use if you move frequently?
For working holiday makers travelling between hostels or work placements:
- Use a stable address where you will reliably receive mail
- A friend's permanent residence is ideal if available
- A long-term hostel works if mail forwarding is reliable
- A postal address (PO Box) is also acceptable
Avoid using a temporary hostel address you will leave within a few weeks. Mail forwarding rarely works well between Australian hostels.
Does your address affect your tax return?
Indirectly. Your tax return itself is lodged electronically and the refund is paid to your bank account. However:
- ATO notices about your return go to your address on file
- Identity verification letters go to your address
- Adjustment letters or audit notices go to your address
Keeping your address current ensures any communication reaches you promptly.
What if you have already left Australia?
If you have departed Australia:
- We can update your address to your overseas address
- This ensures any post-departure correspondence reaches you
- Useful for refund follow-ups, super statements, and audit letters
Send us your overseas address and we will update it with the ATO and any super funds you have. This is part of our standard departure package for working holiday makers leaving Australia.
