What is a White Card and do you need one on a working holiday visa?

If you want to work in construction in Australia, you need a White Card before your first day on site. Here is what it is, how to get it, and what it costs.

Quick answer

A White Card (officially called the Construction Induction Training card) is mandatory for anyone working on a construction site in Australia. It proves you have completed workplace health and safety training and is a legal requirement, not optional.

What is a White Card?

The White Card is a nationally recognised safety credential:

  • Confirms completion of Construction Induction Training
  • Covers on-site hazards, emergency procedures, worker rights
  • Required by Australian work health and safety law
  • Issued by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs)
  • Valid for life in most cases (no expiry)

The card does not qualify you to perform any specific trade. It is purely a safety credential that everyone on a construction site needs.

Who needs a White Card?

Anyone performing construction work in Australia:

  • Labourers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians
  • Landscapers, scaffolders, painters
  • Trades helpers and apprentices
  • Anyone regularly visiting construction sites for work

If you are doing fruit picking, hospitality, or office work, you do not need one. But the moment someone offers you construction work, even short-term casual labouring, you need a White Card before your first shift.

How do you get a White Card?

The process:

  1. Find a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) offering the course
  2. Complete the training (in-person or online, depending on state)
  3. Pass the assessment
  4. Receive your card within a few days

Typical details:

  • Duration: 4-8 hours
  • Cost: around $100 (varies by provider)
  • Format: online or in-person classroom
  • Issued by: nationally accredited RTOs

The cost is a legitimate work-related tax deduction when claimed correctly on your tax return.

Is the White Card valid across all states?

Generally yes:

  • Nationally recognised across most of Australia
  • A card issued in Queensland is valid in NSW, Victoria, SA, Tasmania, Northern Territory, ACT
  • Western Australia has historically operated a separate system - confirm acceptance if heading there

If you plan to work in WA, check with your employer or training provider whether your existing card is recognised or if you need a WA-specific qualification.

How long does the White Card last?

The White Card does not expire:

  • Issued for life once you complete training through an RTO
  • No renewal required in most states
  • Carry the card to every construction job

Keep a photo of the card on your phone in case you lose the physical one.

Can you claim the cost as a tax deduction?

Yes. If you completed the White Card course to qualify for or maintain construction employment:

  • The course cost is deductible as a work-related expense
  • Include it in your tax return
  • Keep the receipt as evidence

Our team includes these training costs when we prepare your return. If you have multiple work-related certifications, we claim all of them.
