Can you apply for a TFN before arriving in Australia?

Yes, in most cases you can apply for a TFN before you land in Australia. Here is how it works and what you need.

Quick answer

Yes, you can apply for an Australian Tax File Number (TFN) before you arrive in Australia, as long as your working holiday visa has already been granted.

Why is applying for a TFN early worth it?

Applying for your TFN before arriving means it can be processed while you are still travelling or preparing for your trip. By the time you start your first job, your TFN may already be waiting for you, allowing your employer to apply the correct 15% working holiday maker tax rate from day one.

The benefits in numbers:

  • Application takes around 10 minutes online
  • Processing time is up to 28 days
  • Apply one month before arrival and your TFN may be there when you land
  • Avoids weeks of 45% withholding that would otherwise be reclaimed only at tax time

What do you need to apply from overseas?

To apply for an Australian TFN from outside Australia, you need:

  • A valid Australian working holiday visa that has already been granted (not just applied for)
  • Your passport number, visa details, and date of birth
  • A valid Australian postal address where the ATO can send your TFN letter
  • A valid email address for application confirmations

The address requirement is the main complication. The ATO sends your TFN as a physical letter to an Australian address. If you have booked accommodation for your first weeks in Australia, you can use that address. A hostel address works fine if you can reliably receive mail there.

If you do not yet have a confirmed Australian address, it may be easier to wait until you arrive and have somewhere to stay before applying.

What if your visa changes or is cancelled?

If your visa situation changes between applying for your TFN and arriving in Australia, get in touch with our team to update your details. Your TFN itself is permanent and does not expire even if your visa does. However, the records on file with the ATO should reflect your current visa status.

What to do after you arrive in Australia

Once you are in Australia and have started work:

  1. Provide your TFN to each employer you work for
  2. Complete a Tax File Number Declaration form for each employer
  3. Confirm the correct 15% rate appears on your next payslip

Your TFN is also required to lodge your tax return at the end of the financial year and to access your superannuation when you leave Australia.
