What to do if your TFN application is delayed

If your TFN has not arrived after 28 days, here is what to check and how to follow up with the ATO.

Quick answer

If your TFN has not arrived after 28 days, the most common causes are an address error in your application or a letter lost in the post.

What is the first thing to check?

Address issues are the most common cause of delayed TFN delivery. Start there:

  • Pull up the confirmation email you received when you submitted your application
  • Compare the address it shows against where you are currently staying
  • Check for typos in street name, postcode, suburb, or unit number
  • If you have moved since applying, ask anyone at your previous address whether the letter arrived there

A single character error (a wrong postcode digit, for example) is enough to send the letter to the wrong area or have it returned to the ATO as undeliverable.

Have 28 days actually passed?

The 28-day processing window starts from the date the ATO received your application, not the date you submitted it. Online applications are usually received the same day, but it is worth confirming on your confirmation email before assuming there is a problem.

If you applied less than 28 days ago, the application is still within the normal processing window.

How to follow up on a delayed TFN

If 28 days have passed, your address was correct, and no letter has arrived:

  1. Get in touch with our team - we follow up directly with the ATO on your behalf
  2. Have your application reference number ready (from the confirmation email)
  3. We verify your identity and chase the application through to resolution
  4. If your TFN was already issued but the letter was lost, we arrange for it to be reissued securely

Following up with the ATO yourself involves long phone wait times and an identity verification process that requires Australian-specific documents. Our team handles this directly, often resolving delays within a few business days.

Can you continue working during the delay?

Yes. While you are waiting, you can continue working. Let your employer know your TFN is on the way and show them the ATO confirmation email. Once your TFN is resolved, give it to your employer immediately with a completed Tax File Number Declaration form. Any overpaid tax from the waiting period can be reclaimed through your tax return.
