A Tax File Number (TFN) application requires an Australian address where the TFN letter can be delivered, but this does not have to be a long-term rental.
The bigger risk is choosing an address where mail goes missing. A lost TFN letter delays your correct tax rate and the start of any tax refund you are owed.
What does the ATO accept as an address?
The TFN application requires an Australian residential or postal address. The ATO accepts:
- A rental property, share house, or sublet
- A hostel or backpacker accommodation
- A friend or relative's residence
- A workplace address (with permission from your employer)
- A mail-holding service or PO Box (used by long-term travellers)
The ATO does not check whether you actually live at the address. What matters is that the TFN letter, sent by Australia Post, is collected and not returned to sender.
Why a hostel address can be risky
Hostels are a common choice for first-time TFN applications, but they come with two risks. First, large hostels handle hundreds of pieces of mail and letters get lost, returned, or discarded. Second, if you check out before the letter arrives, the hostel rarely forwards it.
If a hostel address is the only option, ask the front desk in writing whether they will hold mail for you, and check daily once two weeks have passed since application. The standard ATO processing time is 28 days, but the letter usually arrives within 10 to 14 days.
What if you move before the letter arrives?
Moving accommodation before your TFN letter arrives is one of the most common reasons working holiday makers never receive their TFN. Once the letter is posted to the old address, the ATO will not automatically resend it.
If you have moved, our team can update your address with the ATO and arrange for the TFN to be reissued or confirmed by other means. See our article on updating your address with the ATO for more detail.
How do you apply without a fixed address through our service?
When we lodge a TFN application through our service, we can use a verified address that holds mail securely for the duration of the application. Once the TFN is issued, we confirm it with you directly through our system, so you receive your TFN even if you have changed accommodation in the meantime. This removes the most common failure point in TFN applications for travellers who are still finding longer-term accommodation.
How do you keep your TFN safe once it arrives?
A TFN letter is a high-value document. Once it arrives, do not leave it lying around in shared accommodation, do not photograph it for social media, and do not share it with anyone other than your employer, your bank, your super fund, or a registered tax agent. See our article on protecting your TFN from fraud for the full list of who is allowed to ask for your TFN and who is not. Get in touch with our team to apply for your TFN through a registered tax agent channel.
