TFN application: which identity documents do working holiday makers need?

A TFN application requires specific identity documents: your passport, working holiday visa grant notice, and an Australian address. Full list of what is accepted and common pitfalls to avoid.

Quick answer

A Tax File Number (TFN) application for a working holiday maker requires a valid passport, the visa grant notice for a subclass 417 or 462 visa, and an Australian residential address where the TFN letter can be delivered.

Missing or mismatched documents are the leading cause of TFN application rejections, and a rejected application means weeks of tax withheld at 45% instead of 15%.

What documents are required?

For a working holiday maker TFN application, the ATO needs:

  • Valid passport (the same one used to enter Australia on your current visa)
  • Visa grant notice or visa label confirming subclass 417 or 462
  • Australian residential address (the TFN letter is posted here)
  • Date of arrival in Australia on the current visa
  • Country of citizenship and country of birth

The application also requires an email address and an Australian or international phone number for contact.

What counts as a valid Australian address?

The Australian address can be any address where mail can be received reliably. This includes:

  • A rental property or share house
  • A hostel or short-term accommodation (with permission to receive mail)
  • A friend or relative's address
  • A workplace address (with employer permission)

The TFN letter is sent by post and cannot be redirected easily once issued. If you move before the letter arrives, our team can update the address with the ATO on your behalf.

What if your name on your passport contains special characters?

Names with hyphens, accents, apostrophes, or multiple middle names cause more rejections than any other identity issue. The TFN application must match the name on the visa grant character for character. If your passport reads "François Müller" and the application is submitted as "Francois Muller", the ATO may reject it as a mismatch.

When we lodge a TFN application through our service, we cross-check your name against your visa grant and passport before submission to prevent the mismatch.

Why use our service instead of applying yourself?

The public TFN application form does not warn you about mismatches before submission. A wrong character, an out-of-date passport number, or an incorrect arrival date is only caught after the ATO rejects the application, weeks later. Our team verifies every detail against your passport and visa grant before lodgement, and we lodge through a tax agent channel that processes applications faster than the public route.

What about TFN security?

Never share copies of your passport, visa grant, or TFN with anyone who is not a registered tax agent. Scammers regularly pose as "accountants" or "tax helpers" on backpacker forums, social media, and messaging apps to collect identity documents. Once they have your TFN and passport details, they can lodge a fraudulent tax return in your name and divert the refund to their own account. A registered tax agent is listed on the Tax Practitioners Board register with a TAN number. If you cannot verify the number, do not share your documents. Apply for your TFN under the supervision of a registered tax agent to keep your identity protected.
